My Left Leg-A Walk with Lymphedema

What is one supposed to do? Many of you heard about the storms in the North East portion of the United States. Well for me it was not only an eye opener it was an opportunity for a reality check. In my previous blogs I mentioned the importance of proper leg maintenance, which includes "pumping my legs" (lymphapress machine).

Let me start with this, I was not prepared! I pride myself on being a person who thinks ahead well... (smile) not this time. I was prepared for the storm, I had candles and lanterns. But what about my legs? In my mind this was not a real issue after all I had my stockings.

As I look back, it is rather comical, surely it was not funny in the midst of the storm. I live on the sixth floor of a building that has an elevator, as you can imagine the elevator was NOT working. I sat through the storm all night (in the dark), mentally planning what I needed to take with me and keeping in mind that it had to be absolutely necessities. Six flights on painful legs and knees was not an easy task. I NEVER even thought about the machine, after all I would have to carry it. I made it down the very dark stairwell safely (thank you Lord) and arrived to a myriad of other problems but I was able to do it right? Into Day 2 I'm thinking about how much the pain has increased, and I'm wondering what should I do? I only had one option, hmmm maybe I can go to the local hospital--which has a lymphedema center, and maybe just maybe they will allow me to "pump" my legs for an hour. HA right this is a hospital, and it's not non-profit. so I never even attempted that one. Bottom line I had to weather the storm no pun intended. I did the massage manually (better than nothing right?)

How do you plan for something like that? I still don't know. What I do know is... I need a plan before the next storm...it's enevidable, there will be another.
