My Left Leg - A Walk with Lymphedema

Well I sit down today with good new, my goal was to be "without cane" by the end of the summer. I have been walking without my cane for about a week now and needless to say I am more than happy. I hesitated to call this a victory because in my heart I feel I still may need it. But I have to rejoice in this even small victory because just a few short months ago I could not walk a few feet without it.

I am starting to recognize several "triggers" with my leg pain/swellings. When my body goes through certain hormonal changes, I swell more, when I travel, I swell more, when I first rise in the morning there is increased pain, at the end of a full days work, there is increased pain. With this said, I now realize that there are certain things that I will have to do to be pro-active. I will definitely have to wrap when I travel, I may have to pump soon as I get home. I'm thinking there are exercises that will have to be done throughout the day to minimize the discomfort at the end of the day (I will test this theory this week). I absolutely cannot over exert myself. Rest, proper eating and exercises is going to have to become a regular part of my daily routine.

I took a giant step today, not only did I move about without my cane, today I left it home for the first time in months! What a feat for me. I went to lunch and did a little shopping, I'm home and I am not in pain! Pardon me but I have to celebrate the little victories in my life...don't you? I am not a drinker but to this I toast--Hip hip Hooraaaay
